Creating thread or fine yarn from the cotton
plant by spinning the raw fibre contained
within the seed-pods. The fibre is separated
from the pods by a machine called a cotton
ginn. It is then cleaned and the fibres are
separated out (carding). Finally the fibres
are drawn out to the desired length and
twisted together to form strong thread. In
Britain, spinning by hand declined with the
widespread adoption of factory machinery
during the late 18th century.
